Former Sri Lankan wicketkeeper Pubudu Dassanayake has been appointed as the head coach of the USA men`s cricket team. This announcement from USA Cricket confirms his second stint in charge, having previously led the team between 2016 and 2019. Dassanayake, aged 54, is a familiar figure in the world of associate cricket coaching, with prior roles including coaching Canada and Nepal. His most recent position with Canada saw him lead the national side from July 2022 until the conclusion of the T20 World Cup in July 2024.
Johnathan Atkeison, CEO of USA Cricket, explained the decision: “For us, it was about finding a coach who not only fits the team`s current needs but also can grow with us towards our overall organizational goals as we prepare for the T20 World Cup in 2026, the ODI World Cup in 2027, and the LA Olympics in 2028 and beyond. We cannot afford to waste time; we need someone who can start immediately and be successful now and in the future as the team develops.”
Atkeison added, “Pubudu is exceptional in these areas. His deep understanding of the associate cricket scene, his prior experience in America, and his proven history of building winning teams make him the ideal choice to lead this team forward.”
Dassanayake possesses an impressive record as an associate coach. Under his leadership, USA achieved ODI status for the first time in 2019, and Canada regained theirs in 2023. He also coached Canada in their last Cricket World Cup appearance in 2011 and guided Nepal to their inaugural T20 World Cup in 2014, both achieved through highly competitive qualifying tournaments.
The cricketing landscape in the USA has significantly changed since Coach Pubudu`s previous tenure. The introduction of Major League Cricket has revolutionized the sport. Speaking about the captaincy, Dassanayake said, “Monank is a strong character who is confident in his abilities. I believe he will be a good captain. He was a junior player when I was here before, and he has performed well since. I am here to help him develop as a captain. There are many areas within the system and team where I can provide support. As one of our main batsmen, he also needs to concentrate on scoring runs for us to win. So, it`s a complete package. I will support him to achieve his best for himself and the team.”
Dassanayake stressed the importance of creating a transparent cricket system where performance and work ethic are the only criteria for selection. Having coached in Minor League Cricket and gained insight into the talent across the US, he is keen to fully utilize this talent pool and bring the best players into the national setup.
He stated, “We want to establish an environment where performance is the only thing that matters for team selection. Once this honest system is in place, players will understand that their statistics, effort, and work ethic are the sole determinants for being in the system. It will be exciting to discover other talents across the country. However, the current squad is already quite good and settled.”
“The goal is to find additional talent within the system and integrate them into the team. If there are good fast bowlers, I definitely want to see them. If there are unconventional spinners, I`d like to see them and assess if anyone can fit into the batting group as well. We need healthy competition within the squad.”
There has been considerable debate within the US cricketing community regarding current selection processes, particularly for the men`s team. Traditionally, USA Cricket has relied on performances in its official national championships. However, critics have long argued for a more inclusive approach that considers performances from major domestic competitions like Minor League Cricket (MiLC), Major League Cricket (MLC), the Houston Open, and the Atlanta Open.
Dassanayake agreed with these sentiments, stating, “I would like to see every player. I mean, every player in the country feel that they have a real chance of playing for the national team.”
The USA Cricket CEO also expressed openness to reforming the selection process, emphasizing a broader perspective: “We are open to all possibilities as we look to revise our systems. Every part of the ecosystem is important to us. We recognize that players develop through various pathways, and we are open to exploring all of them.
