Rohit Sharma has officially stated that he is not retiring from One Day International cricket. He made this announcement after India’s victory over New Zealand in the Champions Trophy final in Dubai.
Sharma clarified his position to stop any future speculation. He emphasized that he is committed to playing ODIs and wants to ensure no false rumors circulate about his retirement.
This statement was more of a direct announcement than a response to a question. Following the usual post-final press conference, Sharma took the opportunity to confirm his ongoing involvement in the ODI format.
During the press conference, when asked about his future plans, Rohit had initially responded in Hindi, indicating that things would proceed as they are currently. He suggested he remains motivated and passionate about the game.
In the Champions Trophy, Sharma scored 180 runs and surpassed 11,000 ODI runs during the tournament. His current ODI record includes 11,168 runs in 273 matches, with an average of 48.76, featuring 32 centuries, including three double centuries.
The topic of his retirement arose during the Champions Trophy, with many predicting he might retire from ODIs, similar to his T20 retirement after the World Cup in Barbados last June. He had announced his retirement from T20s immediately after leading India to victory in that tournament.
There has also been speculation about Virat Kohli’s future in T20s, but he performed well in the Champions Trophy after a period of lower scores. Kohli scored 218 runs, including a century, in the five matches of the tournament. Like Rohit, Kohli also retired from T20 Internationals in Barbados last June.
