The Indian cricket team held an intensive practice session on Wednesday evening, but captain Rohit Sharma and vice-captain Shubman Gill were noticeably less involved. During the three-hour session at the ICC Academy in Dubai, Rohit appeared to be mainly observing, while Gill did not attend practice at all.

Although there was no official word on their limited participation, it is understood that Rohit is managing a hamstring injury. This injury is believed to have occurred during India’s match against Pakistan on Sunday, February 23rd. He briefly went back to the dressing room during Pakistan’s innings but did return to the field. Rohit also participated in India’s successful run chase of 242, scoring 20 runs off 15 balls.

Rohit watched from the sidelines as his teammates engaged in a rigorous batting practice. It is thought that he is taking precautions to avoid worsening the injury before India’s upcoming match against New Zealand on March 2nd, as well as the important knockout stage games – the semi-final on March 4th and potentially the final on March 9th.

It would not be surprising if Rohit rests for the New Zealand game, especially as it is not a critical match, with both teams already qualified for the semi-finals. While securing the top spot in the group is desirable, prioritizing player fitness might be more important. Changes to the team lineup from Sunday’s game are expected.

Meanwhile, Gill remained indoors due to illness. However, he is expected to recover in time for the March 2nd match. Rishabh Pant, who had been ill with a fever, has fully recovered and had an extended batting session during practice. Mohammed Shami was the only other player who did not bat, but he bowled at full strength to the main Indian batsmen, including Virat Kohli.
