Sony Pictures has officially announced the production of a new film based on the Resident Evil franchise. Company representatives confirmed this news to journalists at Deadline.
Zach Cregger, known for the horror film ‘Barbarian’, will direct the movie. Cregger stated, “I’ve been a huge fan of these games for decades, and the opportunity to bring this incredible work to life is a true honor for me.” He co-wrote the screenplay with Shay Hatten (‘John Wick 4’).
This new Resident Evil film is intended to reboot the franchise. The plot is expected to return the series to its horror game roots. The film is scheduled to premiere on September 18, 2026.
The Resident Evil franchise began in 1996 and includes 29 games, including remakes and spin-offs. The first film adaptation was released in 2002. The film series starring Milla Jovovich consists of six movies, collectively grossing over $1.2 billion. Additionally, another film ‘Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City’ was released, aiming to be a reboot closer to the source material, but it underperformed at the box office.
