The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) stated on Monday that veteran cricketers Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah need to demonstrate their form to secure their spots in the One Day International (ODI) team.
Their performances in the 2025 Champions Trophy were disappointing. Mushfiqur Rahim scored 0 and 2 against India and New Zealand, respectively. Mahmudullah, returning from injury and missing the first match, scored only 4 runs against New Zealand.
As senior players, they were expected to guide the young team at the ICC event held in the UAE and Pakistan. However, their shot selection, particularly in the New Zealand match, faced criticism.
Bangladesh’s performance in the recent tournament was a key topic at the 18th BCB board of directors meeting on Monday, held at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium.
After the meeting, Nazmul Abedin, chairman of BCB’s cricket operations, was questioned about whether Mushfiqur and Mahmudullah are being considered for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Nazmul Abedin responded that it’s a ‘very difficult question’ and emphasized that ‘they have to prove themselves.’ He added, ‘Considering their age and performances, it’s not my decision, but the selectors’. It wouldn’t be right to comment further, but it’s not going to be very easy.’
He acknowledged their significant experience and contributions, stating, ‘Definitely they are our very experienced players with lots of contributions.’ However, he also noted the natural progression of careers, saying, ‘Of course for any player, there comes a time when the end of a career happens. I feel that we will sit with both of them and hear their thoughts about their future.’
