Former Indian Premier League (IPL) chairman, Lalit Modi, has become a citizen of Vanuatu, an island nation in the South Pacific. His legal team has stated that he is currently taking steps to give up his Indian passport.
According to Mehmood Abdi, Modi’s lawyer, all necessary procedures to surrender his Indian passport are being followed.
Modi, who has been residing in the UK for the past 15 years since leaving India in 2010 amidst IPL controversies, will continue to live there. A source close to Modi confirmed his continued residency in the UK.
Mr. Abdi also emphasized in a statement that no Indian agency has ever filed any chargesheet or complaint against Lalit Modi in any Indian court, and no charges have been officially brought against him by any Indian court.
The need to surrender his Indian passport arises from the regulation that Indian citizens are not allowed to hold passports from two countries.
Lalit Modi is known as the founder of the IPL. He left India after the 2010 controversy and was subsequently removed from the Board of Control for Cricket in India, facing allegations of corruption.
