Punjab Kings’ newly appointed captain, Shreyas Iyer, has lauded head coach Ricky Ponting, stating that Ponting makes him feel like a great player.
During a media interaction in Chandigarh on Tuesday, March 18th, Iyer spoke about Ponting’s supportive nature: “He supports everyone. When I previously worked with him, he instilled in me the belief that I am a great player capable of excelling in this format. The confidence he gives is unparalleled.”
Iyer emphasized the team’s ambition: “Our goal is to win the trophy. That’s our current mindset, and we are taking it step by step. It’s not an overnight achievement, but the way we are currently practicing and connecting with each other shows great promise.”
Both Ponting and Iyer have joined the Punjab Kings franchise this year, although they have collaborated before at Delhi Capitals.
Ponting praised Iyer, calling him “a great human being and a leader.” He added, “He is an IPL-winning captain, and we couldn’t ask for more. He recently joined the camp and is already making his presence felt as a captain and leader. This will further develop in the coming days leading up to our first game. I am extremely happy to have him.”
Expanding on the team’s composition, the two-time World Cup-winning captain noted, “We have an excellent blend of youth and experience, featuring high-quality Indian players and overseas talents.”
“I am delighted with how the squad has come together. Our first session last night was very successful, and the team is training exceptionally well,” Ponting concluded.
Punjab Kings are scheduled to commence their campaign on March 25th against Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Following this, they will play two home games at the New PCA Stadium in New Chandigarh against Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings.
