Despite being a match with no bearing on the tournament standings, the upcoming game between India and New Zealand is anticipated to be unique. Experts suggest that spin bowlers are likely to be the central focus of Sunday’s match, considering the pitch conditions at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium (DICS).

Ryan ten Doeschate’s Prediction

Ryan ten Doeschate commented before the game, stating, “Yes, I believe so… and both teams might field four spinners, making it a real contest of spin bowling. Entering this competition, we didn’t foresee such a heavy reliance on spin, but the spinners have performed well, and the pitch has offered some assistance. I expect the same conditions for the next match.”

Team Lineups and Spin Options

India is expected to include at least three spin bowlers in their playing eleven: Ravindra Jadeja, Varun Chakaravarthy, and Axar Patel. New Zealand might strategically choose to field as many as four spinners, including Mitchell Santner, Michael Bracewell, Glenn Phillips, and Rachin Ravindra.

Glenn Phillips on Spin and Pace Balance

Glenn Phillips acknowledged the potential effectiveness of spin bowlers at DICS but cautioned against overlooking New Zealand’s pace attack. “We have two excellent specialist spinners, along with all-rounders like myself and Rachin who can contribute with overs if needed.”

He further added, “However, we also have three high-quality pace bowlers – Matt Henry, Kyle Jamieson, and William O’Rourke, who have the advantage of generating variable bounce, as seen in Pakistan, which can be challenging for batsmen. This provides a good balance to our team. The pitch conditions are evolving with each game, and this match will be no different. Ultimately, success will depend on each player performing at their best on the day.”

Pitch Conditions and Scoring Expectations

Due to the slow nature of the pitch, recent matches have not been high-scoring affairs. In contrast, matches in Pakistan, part of the same tournament, have witnessed high scores being both set and chased down. Ten Doeschate supported this observation.

Adapting to Pitch Conditions

“I wouldn’t say scoring is inherently difficult on this pitch,” Ten Doeschate explained. “I think we’ve become accustomed to consistently achieving scores of 320. Reaching 320 has been challenging here as the pitch has played slightly differently in our view compared to other locations in this tournament. However, scores of 280-290 are achievable with good batting. While it’s not the high-scoring environment of Pakistan where 320-330 is expected, teams need to adapt and aim for a score that is competitive on these wickets. We estimate that to be around 280-290 based on the first two matches,” the expert commented.

New Zealand’s Team Dynamics

Phillips also suggested that New Zealand often performs well, especially against India, because their players experience a sense of security, largely due to less intense competition for team spots compared to teams like India.

Confidence and Team Stability

“We are fortunate in New Zealand to have a smaller player pool than India, which allows us to give players longer opportunities before considering the next generation. This naturally builds confidence.” Former New Zealand coach Mike Hesson echoed a similar sentiment in a separate discussion.

“The level of competition for places is somewhat different from the Indian setup, purely due to numbers. However, we have players waiting ready to step in and perform. We try not to focus on external pressures because we are all united as a team,” Phillips concluded.
