The Communication Workers of America (CWA), a prominent labor union in the United States, has announced the establishment of the United Videogame Workers (UVW).
UVW-CWA is designed as an open organization, welcoming all video game industry employees from both the USA and Canada, irrespective of their specific roles or employment status. The organization’s mission, as stated in a press release, is to foster community and solidarity among video game workers and to develop significant educational initiatives regarding labor practices within the industry. A primary initial step for the union will be to disseminate information about widespread job cuts and to initiate a petition addressing this critical issue.
Initial conversations regarding the formation of a major union independent of specific companies began in 2018. Subsequently, employees at studios including Activision, Blizzard, Zenimax, SEGA, and others have declared the formation of their own distinct organizations.
