Delhi Capitals have overtaken Mumbai Indians to reach the summit of the WPL 2025 table after a dominant nine-wicket victory at Bengaluru’s M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. This win marks the Capitals’ second triumph over the reigning champions this season, orchestrated by a stellar bowling display spearheaded by Jess Jonassen, who secured her sixth three-wicket haul in WPL history.
Despite favorable batting conditions, Mumbai Indians were limited to a modest score of 123. The chase was effectively sealed by a powerful 85-run opening stand between Meg Lanning, who remained unbeaten on 60 from 49 balls, and Shafali Verma, who contributed a rapid 43 off 28 deliveries. Delhi Capitals achieved victory with a significant 33 balls remaining, substantially improving their net run rate.
Mumbai Indians entered this top-of-the-table clash with an unbeaten record at this venue this season. After being asked to bat first, they started positively, with Yastika Bhatia hitting the first ball for four. Bhatia and Hayley Matthews provided a steady start, with Matthews finding the boundary on four occasions.
The momentum shifted in the final over of the powerplay when Shikha Pandey bowled a maiden over and dismissed the struggling Yastika Bhatia, who scored just 11 runs off 35 balls, which surprisingly turned out to be the highest score for the first wicket. Mumbai faced another setback in the following over as Annabel Sutherland removed Hayley Matthews.
Harmanpreet Kaur began her innings with a lucky boundary off Titas Sadhu but, along with Nat Sciver-Brunt, began to rebuild the innings for Mumbai. The pair accelerated in the 10th over, scoring 18 runs off Sadhu, indicating their intent to increase the scoring rate. However, Jess Jonassen’s return to the attack changed the game’s direction.
Jonassen first dismissed Harmanpreet with an arm ball, which the Mumbai Indians captain missed while attempting a leg-side nudge. DRS offered no reprieve. In her next over, Jonassen bowled a flighted delivery that deceived Sciver-Brunt, who returned a simple catch to the bowler. Mumbai Indians struggled to recover from these quick wickets and succumbed to an excellent spell from Minnu Mani, who dismissed both S Sajana and Amelia Kerr in a single over. Kerr’s dismissal was highlighted by a spectacular catch from Sutherland in the deep. Mumbai lost 5 wickets for just 23 runs, eventually finishing at 123/9.
This total was never likely to trouble Delhi, and their opening batters ensured any doubts were quickly erased. Meg Lanning started aggressively with two boundaries in the first over off Shabnim Ismail. Shafali Verma then attacked Sciver-Brunt in the third over, hitting a powerful six and two fours in a 16-run over. By the end of the powerplay, Delhi had amassed 57 runs, with Lanning and Verma achieving their 11th 50-run partnership – the most in the league.
Verma was the more aggressive partner in the stand, hitting two more sixes in an over from Kerr before finally being dismissed in the 10th over by Amanjot Kaur. From that point onwards, it was a comfortable chase for the Capitals. Their captain, Meg Lanning, ensured a smooth victory, reaching her eighth half-century in the tournament and remaining unbeaten to guide her team across the finish line.
