The Cricket Welfare Association of Bangladesh (CWAB) is preparing to hold elections in the near future.
Members of CWAB convened at a restaurant in Dhaka on Wednesday, February 5th, and established a four-member committee to supervise the election process. This action was taken because the current president, Naimur Rahman, is unavailable due to personal reasons and is currently away from cricket activities.
Naimur Rahman, who is Bangladesh’s first Test captain and has served as CWAB president for an extended period, has been less visible since the recent change in government. His reduced public profile is linked to his association with the Awami League, the political party that lost power following the student movement in July-August 2024.
Selim Shahed has been appointed as the convener of this committee, which also includes prominent former national players Habibul Bashar, Hannan Sarkar, and Nurul Hasan. Debabrata Paul, the general secretary of CWAB, is expected to provide guidance to the committee members regarding the association’s constitution and electoral procedures.
Minhajul Abedin, a former national team captain who attended the meeting, informed Cricbuzz on Wednesday, “Elections will be held in CWAB soon, and this committee will be responsible for planning our next steps in this direction.”
He further added, “We will need to organize an Annual General Meeting (AGM), which will take place before the elections at an appropriate time.”
During CWAB’s Annual General Meeting in May 2023, which was the first in ten years, no other candidates challenged the positions held by the incumbent president, Naimur Rahman, and general secretary, Debabrata Paul. This lack of challenge allowed them to retain their positions within the association.
