Charlie Edwards will have his brother Sunny in his corner for his upcoming fight, marking a reconciliation after Sunny’s retirement from boxing.
The brothers, who trained and sparred together early in their careers, are now working together again.
Their relationship has had its ups and downs, even leading to discussions about a potential fight between the brothers.
Charlie once mentioned that their father, Larry, had hoped to see them settle their differences in the boxing ring.
In an interview last year, Charlie revealed, “That’s my dad’s dream. And I don’t talk to my dad really anymore for a few years now because I’ve grown up and I’m a man now and I don’t like that energy.”
“He always pitted us against each other. His dream was to see us fight on a big stage, which I find somewhat narcissistic. But for me, that’s not something I want. I value my family too much. I could never forgive myself if I hurt my brother in a fight.”
“And Sunny is also a father to my nephews. Why would I want to do that? We don’t need to fight each other.”
The Edwards brothers did compete on opposite sides when Charlie fought against Thomas Essomba for the European bantamweight title in September. Sunny managed Essomba for that fight.
Charlie won the fight, but it ended with a show of brotherly affection.
After his victory, Charlie commented, “We've always been competitive. He's never handled losing well! Whether it’s Fifa, he’d always quit and throw the controller!”
“But honestly, I love my brother very much, and I appreciate him giving me this opportunity as Thomas’ manager.”
Sunny, 29, retired from boxing in November after a defeat to Galal Yafai, 32, the 2024 Olympic champion.
Despite retiring from fighting, Sunny continues to manage boxers and is now expanding his role to include training.
Sunny has been in Portugal, where Charlie lives with his family, assisting in coaching his older brother.
Charlie, 32, is set to fight Andrew Cain, 28, for the British and Commonwealth bantamweight titles in Liverpool on Saturday night.
Sunny has been working with Charlie’s main coach, Stephen Smith, in the Algarve, strengthening their bond.
