Callum Smith, the interim light-heavyweight champion, dreams of fighting at Anfield, Liverpool’s iconic stadium.
The 34-year-old boxer became the WBO interim light-heavyweight champion after defeating Joshua Buatsi last month. The match was held in Riyadh, as part of the undercard for the Dmitry Bivol versus Artur Beterbiev rematch.
For his next fight, especially as a world champion, Liverpool native Smith hopes for a homecoming.
Speaking to Sky Sports, the former world title challenger discussed the possibility of fighting at Anfield.
He said, “It’s always been the dream. I’m not sure how realistic it is.”
“I think it needs the right opponent, the right time of year – Anfield has a limited window for events.”
“But I have an interim world title now, so if it’s ever going to happen, now might be the time.”
“I need to talk to my team to see if it’s possible. I believe all of Liverpool would love to see it happen.”
Having won against Buatsi to secure the interim title after losing to Beterbiev last year, Smith now wants to challenge Bivol.
About the world champion in the 175lbs division, Smith said, “He is the top fighter in the division. We are waiting to see his plans. He holds all the belts and will have mandatory defenses.”
“He will choose the most financially sensible fight, whether it’s a third fight with Beterbiev or a match against David Benavidez.”
“He has the IBF mandatory challenger, and I will be his WBO mandatory challenger. He has many options.”
Smith also mentioned being open to another British fight, possibly with Anthony Yarde.
However, he is not eager for an immediate rematch with Buatsi.
“I think a rematch would be quite similar to the first fight,” Smith stated.
“I’m sure fans might want to see it again. But personally, I’m not in a rush for a rematch, and I doubt he is either!”
