Former boxing world champion Marcos Maidana has described his unbelievable escape from a potentially fatal accident after being struck by a car traveling at 125mph.
The 41-year-old was riding his motorbike in Santa Fe, Argentina on February 18th when the collision occurred.
The impact from the Renault Clio sent him flying 150 meters before he landed in a ditch filled with soft grass.
Speaking to Infobae, Maidana recounted his experience: "I feel like I have been reborn. I have no memory of the accident itself."
"Although I remained conscious throughout, I only recall waking up in the hospital."
"I am currently resting and undergoing further examinations due to the significant impacts to my back and chest."
He added: "I am still in disbelief. To fly 150 meters and escape without any fractures is incredible."
"My motorbike actually protected my leg, as the engine and its crash bar took the brunt of the impact."
"Without that, my leg would have certainly been broken. Surviving a crash at that speed is truly a miracle."
Maidana held the WBA super lightweight title from 2011 to 2012 and the WBA welterweight title from 2013 to 2014.
The World Boxing Association (WBA) expressed their support for the former champion following his accident.
In a statement, the WBA said: "The World Boxing Association (WBA) conveys its deepest concern and wishes for a speedy recovery to former world champion Marcos “Chino” Maidana, who was involved in a traffic accident this Tuesday on National Route 11 in Santa Fe, Argentina."
The statement concluded: "On behalf of the entire boxing community, the WBA sends its support and best wishes to Marcos Maidana and his family during this challenging time."
"Knowing the strength and resilience that characterized his career, we are confident that “Chino” will overcome this adversity and continue to be an inspiration to us all."
