Despite ongoing military tensions between India and Pakistan, cricket diplomacy appears to be actively working behind the scenes. It is understood that the Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) turned down the Pakistan Cricket Board`s (PCB) request to host the rescheduled Pakistan Super League (PSL) matches, reportedly after receiving a suggestion from Indian cricket administrators.
A cricket official was quoted as saying, “When soldiers are dying at the border, we cannot keep quiet.”
Previous reports had hinted at India`s influence, and the ECB`s decision now seems to align with those indications. The standing of Jay Shah, former BCCI secretary and current ICC Chair, and his well-known connections with the UAE`s leadership and cricket board, are believed to have significantly contributed to this outcome.
The relationship between the BCCI and ECB has remained cordial, especially since the BCCI, under Shah`s leadership, successfully organized one and a half seasons of the Indian Premier League (IPL) and the 2021 T20 World Cup in the UAE. The fact that the ECB`s secretary general, Mubashir Usmani, is an Indian originally from Mumbai further underscores these close ties.
An ECB official reportedly acknowledged India`s role in the matter, stating, “We owe it to the BCCI and Jay Bhai.”
The Pakistan Board initially intended to host its remaining eight PSL games in Dubai and even publicly announced the league`s shift there. However, they had to reverse their decision just hours later, declaring the league`s postponement. It became evident that the foreign players participating in the PSL were unwilling to continue.
The PCB later issued a statement admitting the players` reluctance, saying, “We, at the PCB, also have sincere regard for the mental well-being of participating players and the sentiments of our foreign players, and we respect the concerns of their families who want to see them back home.” At the time of the postponement, four league matches and four play-off games were still to be played.
