John Fisher has spoken about the difficulty of watching his son risk his well-being in a boxing match.
His son, Johnny Fisher, triumphed over Dave Allen in a fierce 12-round boxing match in Riyadh last December. The fight was considered by many fans to be controversial yet undeniably thrilling.
Heavyweight boxer Fisher showed the marks of battle after being taken to the hospital for a precautionary brain scan.
John, Johnny’s father, who is known for promoting his son’s fights on TikTok, watched the match anxiously with his wife Charlotte.
John shared with SunSport, “It’s tough to watch.”
“My wife was beside me, and while I’ve witnessed boxing’s most brutal side and even seen Johnny in tougher sparring sessions, Charlotte was quite distressed.”
“Being in Saudi Arabia, we were seated quite far back, making it hard to fully see everything that was happening. With everyone standing, it wasn’t easy to watch, to be honest. It was not enjoyable.”
Fisher was hospitalized after a narrow points victory, having sustained an injury to his ear.
John explained, “We had to go to the hospital.”
“Brain scans were necessary because his ear swelled up significantly on the left side. He couldn’t even stand steadily in the changing room, his balance was completely off.”
“However, the medical staff in Saudi Arabia were very attentive, which was reassuring while we were at the hospital.”
“He recovered well, his mental faculties were intact, but his balance was completely lost.”
“But this is boxing, a very dangerous sport. Immense respect for all boxers, men and women, boys and girls – no other sport compares.”
Fisher, 26, was knocked down in the fifth round by Allen, 32, but persevered to win by a controversial split decision.
He now aims to dispel any doubts by facing an immediate rematch on May 17 at the Copper Box, just six months after their first intense fight.
And Fisher valued the challenging fight in Riyadh.
He mentioned, “We’ve always discussed in training about facing adversity and demonstrating resilience. These are the moments you aspire to as a professional fighter. While you can’t always be in such situations, showing that I’m not just about knockouts and that I can endure is another positive aspect.”
